Augusta De Wit (1864-1939) was born in Sumatra, spent her early childhood in the Dutch East Indies, and was later educated in Europe. She returned to Batavia in 1894 to teach at a girls' school and later began working as a correspondent for the Singapore Straits Times. This vivid story, based mainly on the author's stay in Batavia, describes the daily life, customs and ceremonies of the natives.
