Jazz Swing Guitar: Includes Downloadable Audio

Explore the language and character of mainstream jazz guitar with Jazz Swing Guitar by guitarist and author Jon Wheatley, a comprehensive study of the timeless swing tradition for intermediate and advanced guitarists. The book brings together 47 lessons and performance-quality etudes designed to develop harmonic sensibility, fingerboard knowledge, essential repertoire, stylistic nuance, and a deeper connection with jazz phrasing. The material encompasses solo guitar, duet playing, and soloing over ensemble settings, creating a varied study of the musical vocabulary at the heart of jazz swing.

Each lesson and etude combines practical guitar study with musical context. The book includes traditional standard notation and guitar tablature, while the accompanying online audio provides recorded performances of the etudes. Hearing the written material performed gives the music an additional dimension, connecting notes on the page with articulation, phrasing, rhythmic feel, and the distinctive sound of mainstream jazz guitar.

The collection places musical expression alongside technical and harmonic development. Its etudes draw on the swing tradition and explore ideas associated with the vocabulary of historic jazz guitar, providing material for focused learning as well as satisfying pieces to play. Across the 47 lessons and etudes, players can work with chord changes, melodic ideas, improvisational concepts, comping, fingerboard knowledge, and ensemble-oriented playing while keeping the sound and feel of jazz at the center of practice.

Jazz Swing Guitar combines guitar TAB, standard notation, and online audio for learning and exploring mainstream jazz guitar. It supports intermediate and advanced guitarists in practice, performance, and expanding their jazz and swing repertoire.
