The Jesuits: a Lecture, Delivered Dec. 23, 1850, in the Musical Fund Hall

The Jesuits: A Lecture, Delivered Dec. 23, 1850, In The Musical Fund Hall by Joseph Frederick Berg. This polemical sermon traces the rise of the Society of Jesus from its founder Ignatius Loyola through its growth into a powerful religious order. Berg outlines Loyola's life, the vows and structure of the order, and its mission to extend Roman Catholic influence worldwide. The lecture contrasts Jesuit aims with Protestant missions, arguing that Jesuitism seeks political and cultural control, operates in secrecy, and seeks to undermine civil liberties and Protestant Christianity. It surveys historical episodes and the order's global reach—education, evangelization, and diplomacy—while asserting that Protestant missions have produced lasting Bible translation, literacy, and Christian literature. The work presents a sweeping, controversial defense of Protestant liberty and a scathing critique of Jesuit influence in church and state.
