About this Item
MacMillan, London, 1886, first edition; large 8vo, 150 x 225mm; pp viii, 473, [2]; steel engraved portrait frontispiece of W S Jevons; original brown pebbled cloth, spine titled gilt; small ink spot and evidence of a 20 x 15mm repair to an earlier tear in the spine, corners and ends of the spine a little bumped, traces from the removal of a label on the front board and vestiges of the same on the front pastedown but despite all that still a sound, tight and reasonable good copy. . . . This collection of Jevons's letters was compiled and edited by his widow for publication four years after his accidental death aged 46. Educated as a chemist and botanist, financial considerations led Jevons to Sydney as an assayer at the Mint. Returning to Britain five years later in 1859 he enrolled as a student at University College, London. Retaining his interest in natural sciences he also studied political economy and wrote works as an economist, making the case for economics as a science and thereby necessarily mathematical. He's recognised as an important figure in the history of economics and credited particularly with his development of the marginal utility theory of value and regarded also as the first economist of any significance to develop an ecological perspective on the economy, this through the so-called Jevons Paradox where he pointed out that increases in energy production efficiency lead to greater and not less consumption. Books are described carefully, accurately and fairly. Despite this errors can occur and of course we'll acknowledge any brought to our attention. Unfortunately too many booksellers, or at least among those recently come to the trade and treating books primarily as commodities, get over-optimistic ab...
More InformationBooks are priced individually and those prices do not include shipping costs or insurance. Books can also be collected, by arrangement.
The shipping matrix is, and can only be, a very rough guide to postage costs being based, as it is, on a base weight of 1kg (2.2lbs), with the additional book bringing that weight up to a maximum of 2Kg and with the package as a whole fitting in to the "small parcel" criterion of height + width + depth not exceeding 90cm and with no single side longer than 60cm (which certainly covers ordinary books, of course).
In consequence, postage costs may be less or more than estimated in that matrix but will always be charged at whatever rate Royal Mail has come up with at the time. We'll also seek to minimise postal charges by packing two or more books together or by using carriers for larger consignments, as appropriate. As for compensation for loss or damage in transit, Royal Mail has quietly reduced the amounts that can be claimed to £20.00 in general but additional insurance can be had and we'll let you know how much that will be where necessary.
