Joe Dimaggio (Baseball Legends)

A biography of the baseball legend who hit safely in fifty-six games during the 1941 season

For a generation that may know DiMaggio only as the Mr. Coffee spokesman, Appel recounts the highlights of the "Yankee Clipper" baseball legend. In center field and at bat, DiMaggio led his team to 10 American League pennant wins and nine World Series titles in his 13 seasons with the Yankees. His 56-game hitting streak in 1941 has never been surpassed, and his 361 home runs have kept him on the all-time record list. Other biographies delve more deeply into DiMaggio's psyche and personal life, but Appel gives readers a solid--if brief--portrait of a talented, private man. DiMaggio's unsuccessful marriages to actresses Dorothy Arnold and Marilyn Monroe are briefly discussed, as are the tributes and events of his retirement years. A nostalgic selection of black-and-white photos enhance this creditable addition to biography collections. --Gerry Larson, Chewning Junior High School, Durham, NC
