About this title

Synopsis

How did early twentieth-century scholars trace the rise of factories, machines and skilled labour? Aksel G. S. Josephson's The John Crerar Library: A List of Books on the History of Industry and Industrial Arts, January 1915, is their answer. It is a living map. Compiled at one of Chicago's foremost research institutions, this meticulous library book catalogue gathers key history of industry books and works on industrial arts history, technology and engineering history into a single, authoritative industrial history bibliography. Organised to guide researchers of industrial history through themes, nations and periods, it doubles as an industrial revolution reading list and a snapshot of early 20th century industry scholarship, seen through the lens of the John Crerar Library collection and Chicago industrial history. Both a practical reference for historians, librarians and students, and a historical reference collection in its own right, it illuminates how knowledge of industry was framed, classified and valued on the eve of the First World War. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Perfect for anyone building a serious reference for historians, curating a specialist library in technology or business, or simply fascinated by the documentary traces of industrial civilisation, this carefully produced edition returns a classic research tool to the desks and shelves of modern readers and collectors.
