John Reads method of stopping fire on board ships was documented in The Gentlemans Magazine in 1793. His approach aimed to halt the spread of fire in wooden vessels, a critical concern in the 18th century, when shipboard fires could quickly become catastrophic. The method was illustrated in this antique copperplate print, its heart is a system of pipes and directional levers installed throughout the ship to deliver water directly to the source of a fire. While specifics of the method are scarce, it likely involved fire suppression mechanisms suited to maritime conditions, possibly using barriers, controlled ventilation, or chemical retardants to slow the flames.
