Synopsis:

A major figure in eighteenth-century Christianity, John Wesley sought to combine the essential elements of the Catholic and Evangelical traditions and to restore to the laity a vital role in church life. He began one of the most dynamic movements in the history of modern Protestantism, a movement which eventually produced the Methodist churches. This volume offers a representative selection of theological writings by Wesley and includes historically oriented introductions and footnotes which indicate Wesley's Anglican, patristic, and biblical sources.

About the Author: John Wesley (1703-1791), and 18th-century Anglican clergyman and Christian theologian, was an early leader in the Methodist movement. Wesley's greatest theological achievement was his promotion of what he termed "Christian perfection," or holiness of heart and life.

Albert Cook Outler was Professor of Theology at the Southern Methodist University Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, Texas. He is generally considered to be one of the most important Wesley scholars in the history of the Church as well as the first real United Methodist theologian. He was also a key figure in the twentieth-century ecumenical movement.
