BRIGHT GILT END PAGES. BINDING AND HINGES ARE VERY GOOD, NO LOOSE OR MISSING PAGES, PAGES ARE NICE AND CLEAN, WITHOUT MARKS EXCEPT FOR PREVIOUS OWNER INSCRIPTION TO FRONT END PAPER (SEE PHOTO), SOME LIGHT SPORADIC FOXING. Three-Quarter Leather. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. This book has been bound with leather on spine and corners, imitation leather over boards. The outside covering of the book has wear and rubbing. The spine had torn and chipped at head and foot. Has been repaired. Leather has worn away at the hinges but the boards are still attached to the text. Corners quite worn with board showing. All edges gilt. End papers have minor spotting. Interior text is sold with all illustrations present. The engravings are quite impressive and well done. No markings of ownership or text interior. Publisher's one-half brown leather over dark brown pebble-cloth boards, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in two compartments and with elaborate gilt decorations in the other four compartments, front cover is ornately lettered in gilt and with gilt rules, all board edges are beveled, all page edges in rich gilt, thick sm 4to. The first edition of this work was published in 1872, this set was published in 1875. Each volume has an essay on evolution that appears at the end of the work: volume I has "An Exposition of the Development Hypothesis as Maintained by Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, Herbert Spencer and the New School of Naturalists" by Prof. Edward L. Youmans M.D., and volume 2 has "A Criticism of the Development Hypothesis as Held by Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, Herbert Spencer and the New School of Naturalists" by Rev. Julius H. Seelye. Both of these essays take an anti-Darwinian view. There are also 7 pages of reviews of the Goodrich set, by eminent professors and writers, at the end of volume 2.
