Joseph and Benjamin: Letters on the Controversy Between Jews and Christians

“Joseph And Benjamin: Letters On The Controversy Between Jews And Christians” by Joseph Samuel C. F. Frey. This 19th-century epistolary work defends the Christian claims about Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God, presenting a dialogue between Joseph and his brother Benjamin addressed to Jews and Christians. Through a sequence of letters, the author weaves Scripture from both the Old and New Testaments with rabbinic sources and Christian doctrinal arguments to persuade Jewish readers while reinforcing orthodox Christian belief for believers. The narrative and argumentical structure cover the exaltation of the Messiah, with attention to Jesus’ divine and human natures, the resurrection, the ascension, intercession, and his kingly authority. The text engages with questions of faith, evidence, and the credibility of eyewitness testimony, and it discusses the Trinity and the deity of Christ within a framework that seeks continuity between Jewish expectation and Christian revelation. It also addresses eschatology, the future restoration of Israel, the resurrection of the dead, and the final judgment, all within an earnest polemical aim to persuade and mobilize readers toward faith in Jesus and mission to the Jews.
