24 years after his death, artist, teacher, and activistJoseph Beuys (1921 1986) is celebrated with anall-inclusive exhibition organized in his hometownDüsseldorf. A highly controversial artist during hislifetime, for whom artistic practice, teaching andpolitical activism were were wedded to each other, heis considered today one of the most important figuresof 20th century avant-garde art, mentioned in thesame breath as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. He revolutionized sculpture by using new materialssuch as felt, honey and grease, which enabled himto explore and represent psychological subjects ofunparalleled breadth and intensity. Making our notionof sculpture flow and expand, he also dissolved it bytranslating his vision into actions that oscillated betweenhappenings and mime and reminded many viewersof shaman rituals. In his early drawings based on abstract forms Beuysdeveloped an idiosyncratic iconography palpitatingbetween fairy tale and fantasy.
