About this Item
Joseph Emin is a historical biography by the Armenian historian A. R. Hovhannisyan devoted to the eighteenth-century Armenian patriot, traveler, and political thinker Hovsep (Joseph) Emin (1726?1809). Drawing upon Armenian, Russian, Persian, and European archival sources, the author reconstructs Emin's remarkable life, including his travels through India, England, Russia, Georgia, and Persia, and his efforts to secure international support for the liberation of Armenia from Ottoman and Persian rule. The study examines Emin's political ideas, diplomatic activities, military plans, and his contribution to the emergence of the modern Armenian national liberation movement. Published shortly after World War II, the work became one of the earliest scholarly monographs on Joseph Emin and remains an important contribution to Armenian historiography and the history of the eighteenth-century Caucasus.
