The Journal of Captain William Pote, jr., during his Captivity in the French and Indian War, from May, 1745, to August, 1747.

Captured on the contested frontier and carried deep into enemy territory, Captain William Pote set down a daily record of fear, endurance and watchful intelligence. His Journal, kept from May 1745 to August 1747, is among the starkest voices to survive from colonial North America history. Every sentence feels perilously close. At once an eighteenth century war diary and a Native American captivity narrative, it traces the shifting realities of a prisoner of war narrative amid raids, marches and uneasy negotiations in 18th century New England and beyond. As a French and Indian War journal, it offers unvarnished frontier warfare accounts that speak directly to readers today. Viewed by many as a classic among captivity narratives of colonial America, Pote's Journal stands as an indispensable primary source document for historians and students engaged in French and Indian War research and the wider study of colonial conflict. Its plain, observant detail complements the grand sweep of Francis Parkman history, bringing to life the human scale of imperial rivalry and cultural encounter. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
