About this title

Synopsis

Survival and discovery on the edge of the known world. A firsthand account of a perilous voyage along the western coast of Africa, where a shipwreck, captivity, and extreme endurance reveal a vivid picture of travel, culture, and hardship in the early 19th century.

This narrative follows the crew of the brig Commerce as they face shipwreck, desert treks, and encounters with wandering Arabs. It blends personal ordeal with historical and geographic observations, offering a rare perspective on life, trade, and survival in a remote part of Africa. The book also includes contextual notes on the people and places encountered, from Rabat to Tangiers, and provides a broad view of the continent during this era.
