Journal of the House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of Virginia

Journal Of The House Of Delegates Of The Commonwealth of Virginiadescribes the Reconstruction-era Virginia General Assembly's late-March 1876 session in Richmond, detailing daily proceedings, votes, and inter-chamber negotiations. The volume centers on high-profile accountability actions, including the concurrent two-house resolution to remove Nelson County judge George S. Stevens for gambling-related offenses and oath violations, and the subsequent election of John Thompson Brown to fill the vacancy. It also traces protracted revenue and finance wrangling over major bills (notably No. 247), conference reports, and the mechanisms by which funding provisions were settled through joint resolutions and committee reports. Additional material covers infrastructure projects (turnpikes and railroads), municipal and corporate charters, taxation, school finance, and government retrenchment. The journal records numerous amendments, recalls, adjournments sine die, and resolutions praising legislative staff, reflecting a formal, procedural culture of Virginia's postwar governance. The included local summaries document broader collections of memorials, financial data, and investigations in a Reconstruction-era catalog of state business.
