Fowler was a little known until Coues was provided a copy of his diary from family members in Kentucky. In 1821, Fowler documented a fur-trapping expedition up the Arkansas River to Pueblo, CO and onto Santa Fe following parts of the Santa Fe Trail, noting the tracks left by Becknell's wagons. The journal is unique in telling a story full of homemade realism. .Dobie p86, Rittenhouse 224, Howes H298, Wagner-Camp 121 mention.
