Fowler was a little known until Coues was provided a copy of his diary from family members in Kentucky. In 1821, Fowler documented a fur-trapping expedition up the Arkansas River to Pueblo, CO and onto Santa Fe following parts of the Santa Fe Trail, noting the tracks left by Becknell's wagons.
