Journal of the Senate of Maine

Journal Of The Senate Of Maine. This volume is a late-19th-century legislative record from the 1870 Maine Senate, capturing the closing phase of the session with engrossed acts, resolutions, and interbranch communications between the Senate, House, and the Governor. It chronicles daily procedures, committee reports, roll calls, readings and engrossments, and the disposition of bills—whether passed, postponed, or referred—alongside packages for future consideration and gubernatorial messages. The record highlights broad policy work in transportation and infrastructure (railroads, bridges, harbors, river navigation), economic development (corporate charters, manufacturing, banking, public works), and public institutions (hospitals, reform schools, educational initiatives). It also documents statutory housekeeping, taxation, state valuation, debt management, and administrative reforms, offering a window into postbellum state governance. Interbranch negotiations, memorials, resignations, and ceremonial procedures accompany the substantive acts, collectively illustrating a deliberate effort to finalize a comprehensive statutory and financial program before adjournment.
