Journal of the Senate of the State of Ohio

Journal Of The Senate Of The State Of Ohio. This volume documents the January–February 1820 session of the Ohio General Assembly in Columbus, presenting a comprehensive view of early 19th-century state governance. It traces legislative deliberations of the Senate and House, highlighting committee work, engrossment and enrollment procedures, inter-chamber conferences, and the production and distribution of laws and journals. Key policy areas include judicial administration, university governance (Athens), infrastructure projects (roads, canals, toll bridges), and financial matters such as three percent fund allocations and appropriations. The record also covers the impeachment case arising in Columbiana County, with House managers and counsel guiding proceedings in the High Court of Impeachment, subpoenas, rulings on demurrers, witness testimony, and eventually the acquittals of George Brown and William Smith. The text captures a vibrant political process characterized by negotiation across chambers, executive communications from Governor Ethan A. Brown, and the careful enumeration of places across Ohio (Chillicothe, Athens, Granville, Meigs, Muskingum, etc.). It serves as a valuable archival source on early Ohio legislative norms, including impeachment rules, enrollment, and printing practices.
