Journal of a Tour Round the Southern Coasts of England

Journal Of A Tour Round The Southern Coasts Of England by John Henry Manners. This travelogue details a late-18th-century journey along England's southern coastline in 1795, recording vivid observations of towns, landscapes, harbors, and military activity. The narrator describes stops from London toward Ramsgate, Canterbury, Margate, and Dover, then circles east and south to Hastings, Eastbourne, Brighton, Arundel, and Portsmouth, before venturing into Plymouth and Cornwall, Devon, and the Land's End. The text blends navigational and nautical interest with social notes on inns, hospitality, and everyday life, alongside detailed depictions of dockyards, ships in Spithead, and naval operations of the era. It also covers tin and copper mining in Cornwall, tin-stream works, smelting processes, and mining conditions, interwoven with reflections on scenery, architecture, and historical curiosities. The narrative ultimately offers a comprehensive portrait of a bustling maritime Britain at the close of the 18th century.
