Calcutta, Printed at the Baptist Mission Press and published by the Asiatic Society, 1910, IV,99-148 pag., portrait, large folding facsimile and large folding map of Bengal and Bahar (54 x 75 cm.), contemporary gilt green cloth with marbled board covers, quarto. - (total volume pagination: 914, (6),710 pag.), plates. = Rare first edition in print of the manuscript journal kept by Rennell during his survey of the Ganges between 1764 and 1767, edited by Thomas Henry Digges La Touche (1855-1938). Rennell produced some of the first accurate maps of Bengal at one inch to five miles as well as accurate outlines of India and served as Surveyor General of Bengal. Rennell has been called the Father of Oceanography. In 1830, he was one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society in London. The early volumes of the Memoirs of the Asiatic Society of Bengal are among the most important early works on South and Southeast Asian studies. Published by the Asiatic Society in Calcutta under Sir William Jones, they mark the beginning of modern Oriental scholarship. These volumes cover a wide range of subjects, including linguistics and philology, religion and philosophy, history and archeology, natural sciences, ethnography and cultural history. Books are in very good or better antiquarian condition, unless described otherwise. Serious defects are stated, minor defects not always. All prices are in Euro, tax included, but without postage, packing and bank charges, which are at buyer's expense. Shipping of books after receipt of payment - usually within 2-3 business days. Shipping of books outside the EU, or to commercial and institional addresses is at buyers risk. Airmail & insurance rates on request. Displayed shipping costs are based on books weight 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required. All disputes which may arise are subject to Dutch law.
