The Journey Back to Life: How I Took It One Day at a Time to Recover

What if recovery was not about strength, but about honesty?
What if freedom came one day at a time?

In The Journey Back to Life, Mark Elliott Toussaint tells the unfiltered story of his twenty-one-year battle with addiction, mental illness, relapse, incarceration, and despair, and the faith-driven recovery that finally changed everything. From crack cocaine addiction in the late 1980s, to repeated jail sentences, detox centers, and broken relationships, Toussaint’s story reflects the brutal reality of addiction without excuses or exaggeration.

This is not a polished success story. It is a lived one.

Through jail cells, mental health institutions, and countless failed attempts at sobriety, Mark shows how addiction patiently waits, how relapse begins in the mind long before it shows up in behavior, and how willpower alone is never enough. His turning point comes not through control, but through surrender, honesty, and a commitment to recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, mental health treatment, and faith in God.

Today, with more than fourteen years of sobriety, Toussaint writes not as a distant observer, but as someone who has lived every page. He speaks openly about mental illness, medication compliance, therapy, and spiritual growth, challenging the idea that recovery is purely spiritual or purely clinical. Instead, he presents healing as a whole-person journey, mind, body, and spirit.
