A Journey Through the Psalms

The Psalms are an often-overlooked source for sermons - yet they are very rich in exactly what makes preaching relevant to modern listeners. From personal suffering to the absence of God, from national failure to the burden of personal sin, the Psalms are filled with the pathos of the human struggle to create and maintain a living relationship with God - making them excellent vehicles for reflection, prayer, and proclamation. In this book, Schuyler Rhodes takes readers on an enlightening journey through the Psalm pericopes of the complete three-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary. His commentary links these ancient texts with contemporary life, and offers a comprehensive gamut of approaches for understanding and bringing to life an abundant source of sermonic material. A Journey Through the Psalms is an invaluable homiletic tool drawn from the pages of the renowned preaching journal Emphasis that provides numerous starting points for developing solidly scriptural messages that have impact for the people in the pews. A convenient index indicates multiple commentaries on the same text, allowing users to consider alternative approaches. Anyone who wants a better appreciation of the Psalms and how they speak to us today will find this inspiring volume a great addition to their library.
