A Journey to Rome and Naples, Performed in 1817: Giving an Account of the Present State of Society in Italy, and Containing Observations on the Fine Arts

A Journey To Rome And Naples, Performed In 1817 by Henry Sass is a travelogue detailing a 1817 journey from London through Britain, France, and Italy to Rome and Naples, with observations on the present state of society in Italy and reflections on the fine arts. The work traces routes from London via Brighton, Dieppe, Paris, Lyons, Turin, Genoa, Leghorn, Pisa, to Rome and Naples, and onward toward Pompeii, Vesuvius, Tivoli, and Venice, interweaving travel narratives with practical cautions and social critique. It blends descriptions of ancient ruins, churches, and museums with commentary on government, brigands, and national character, while expressing admiration for English institutions and for the Elgin marbles. A substantial prefatory section on the Fine Arts argues for cultivated taste and national improvement, framing the travelogue within broader cultural reflections.
