While designed for group use, it is also helpful for readers who are seeking to substitute the joy of living for their everyday stress.
As a child, he lived under the oppressive occupations of Hitler and Stalin. A survivor of the Holocaust and the Communist takeover of his home country, Rudy learned four languages before finally settling on English as his working language. Two ancient languages that were early in his curriculum were Latin and Greek. In Asia, he studied and used Malay, Korean and Japanese.
In 1948 he escaped the Iron Curtain with his father and brother and settled in Canada. Within three years, at the age of 19, he started teaching school, an occupation that has been his lifelong work.
After marrying a fellow teacher named Anna Homenchuk in 1954 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Rudy and Anna attended Walla Walla College in Walla Walla, Washington, where he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education. Later Rudy earned a PhD from Indiana University, a Doctorate in Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary and a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Rudy and Anna have been married over 50 years.
Rudy and Anna worked as missionaries in the Far East for 26 years. In South Korea and Japan, and later in Hong Kong, Rudy served as college president. (Most likely the only individual who worked in that capacity in the three chopstick cultures.) In 1969, the Minister of Education of Korea awarded him the Outstanding Service Award, and the President of Korea, the Order of Civil Merit, named the DongBaeg Medal.
