The Joy of Medical Practice: Forty Years of Interesting Patients

AS I BEGAN TO PRACTICE MEDICINE, I saw many things happen to patients that I could not explain scientifically, and I began to believe in divine intervention. The more never molecular biology and the complexity of biological systems, from DNA to Nano tubes, the harder it is not to believe in an intelligent design by a divine being. Whether that being is called God, Messiah, Christian Trinity, Allah, or some other name remains a mystery of faith to me.

Many years after my father retired from the practice of medicine be told me that he had developed a deep faith and belief in God because of the things be witnessed during bis thirty-plus years in treating patients.

Christine was a believer before her surgery and continued to attend church functions after her corneal transplant. When her Descemet's scroll broke and cleared her vision while the was watching the resurrection of Jesus, her religion became deeply personal for her. People of faith would say there is a connection between the mole and her miracle.

One of my patients gave me a barn wood sign that said, "God heals, the doctor takes the fee." I often looked at it that way.
