Proxmire, former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin and originator of the "Golden Fleece" Award, believes that the maintenance of good health is the individual's responsibility, not the government's. As he writes in the prolog, "The purpose of this is to make you, dear reader, both happier and healthier. Joy is the key to good health." While his intent is laudable, his execution is disappointing. The entire book is related in a dialog among four members of a fictitious family. Information about the benefits of exercise, diet, and relaxation from articles in The New England Journal of Medicine, Physician and Sportsmedicine, Reader's Digest, etc., is interspersed with comments such as: "JOHN: Bless you, Mom. I missed that article. It sounds like exactly what we need to spread the gospel of joy in exercise." There are other, more effective books such as Raymond Kurzweil's The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life ( LJ 12/92). Not recommended.
