Image measures 9 3/4" x 8 3/4" This map depicts the biblical Holy Land divided into regions controlled by the 12 Tribes of Israel, and is numbered to indicate six provinces and three divisions of Roman-controlled Palestine. Cities lakes, and topographical features are labeled. Mountains are depicted pictorially. Made by Robert de Vaugondy in the 18th century, this edition was published by Delamarche circa 1820 and features a simple title cartouche. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was an important French mapmaker during the 18th century, working alongside his son Didier. Their "Atlas Universel" was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information. Charles Francois Delamarche (1740-1817) was a French mapmaker and publisher. He acquired the plates and copyrights from Robert de Vaugondy in 1787, re-issuing the maps in many atlases through the mid-19th century. His son, Felix, eventually took control over the firm, and they continued to publish maps by Lattre, Sanson, Janvier, Bonne, and Desnos in addition to Robert de Vaugondy's.…
