About this Item
Philadelphia: Linsday & Blakiston / G.B. Zeiber & Co., 1846. Two volumes in one; 12mo (19cm.); original color lithographic pictorial wrappers rather unfortunately reinforced with 20th century cloth tape and blue celluloid wrappers, typescript spine label; x,[11]-179,[1]; iv,5-192pp.; double frontispiece printed lithograph in blue and black. Shallow chips and small losses to wrapper extremities, foxing throughout textblock, 20th century ownership rubberstamp to front free endpaper, else Very Good, though in a reinforced binding that is more utilitarian than aesthetic. Collected humorous pieces by the Canadian right-wing politician and author Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865) first published in the "Novascotian" newspaper, the popularity of which led to multiple printings in book form. However, as Richard A. Davies notes in his short biography of Haliburton for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, "His use of offensive stereotypes in his caricatures of black people.goes well beyond the ethnocentrism of the age, and his portrayal of women is unenlightened. His reputation has never regained the peak it achieved in his lifetime.".
