Newer dark brown morocco binding, red leather spine label lettered in gilt, gilt fillets, new endpapers, xxxii, 430pp, [18]pp index and index of place names, illustrated with 15 engravings including frontispiece, [12] folding, light foxing and toning on text-block, owner name in iron gall ink on title-page, light damp stain on edges of text-block, old tape repair on frontispiece, minor rubbing to boards. Near Fine. Dedicated to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Martin Bladen (1680-1746), a soldier and Member of Parliament, produced what became the standard English translation of Caesar for much of the 18th century. His version went through at least ten editions and was praised for its vigour and accessibility. The illustrations after Palladio, first introduced in the 1705 edition, were a distinctive feature retained through ll subsequent printings. Illustrations feature Caesar's bridge of the Rhine, the siege works at Alesia, Pompey's entrenchments at Dyrrachium, Old France (Gaul), Old Spain and the Roman world.
