Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice, James Cabell Branch, Published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York, Twentieth Printing, 1927, flexible illuminated vellum, 8 x 5.5 , 8vo. In good condition. Stunning incised and painted flexible vellum binding with a rampant lion, vines and flowers and a fleur-de-lis shield! Light wear to extremities with minimal scuffing to edges. Light darkening of vellum from age. Hand painted work has obviously faded overtime, but remains remarkably well preserved for being nearly a century old. Jurgen hand painted title has rubbed away slightly. Gilt paint is slightly tarnished, but remains luminescent. Interior lightly toned. Free of markings or ownership. Binding intact. Please see photos. Wonderfully elegant binding for the 1927 G&D printing of Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice. This famous fantasy by James Branch Cabell, gained famed (or notoriety) shortly after its initial publication in 1919. It is a humorous romp through a medieval cosmos, including a send-up of Arthurian legend, and excursions to Heaven and Hell as in the Divine Comedy.
