By now, most people have heard about the court case involving a woman who received a huge settlement after suing McDonald's for serving her coffee that was too hot to handle. Though it sounds like an urban myth, such examples of frivolous civil suits and outrageous awards are commonplace, and according to Dr. Roberta Katz, compromise not only common sense, but also the integrity of the American justice system. As both a lawyer and a cultural anthropologist, Katz points out that laws and rules must evolve with the times, positing that the current civil-justice system is long overdue for such changes, particularly in regard to the growing role of cyberspace in this so-called Information Age. Written for lawyers and non-lawyers alike, Justice Matters: Rescuing the Legal System for the Twenty-First Century presents visionary ideas without lapsing into legalese or archaic references. Katz's attack on the adversarial system now in place is controversial to be sure, but her goal is no less than restoring faith in the justice system.
