Black cloth with gilt sp.lettering and bevelled edges. f/piece figure with red lines + 83-232, 1 text fig.; fr. end-papers has prev. owner's sig. to top and early oval green stamp of Rabbi J. Kyanski, Newcastle on Tyne, faint small brown smudge bottom corner same, otherwise clean, tight unmarked though hint of edge tanning throughout. This ed. 'Reprinted verbatim from first edition which contained (pp. 1-82) also an essay entitled "The Essenes" '. Apparently very scarce, only one poor copy listed in Israel, which fails to note missingfirst essay. Unclear when 1st issued but one listed as 1920. 12.5 cm x 18.cm. Seller Inventory # 013988

Originally published in 1863 and 1864 these books were first published as a single volume in the UK in 1955, and in the US in 1972. The author surveys the known information on the little-know Essenes- one of the few Jewish monkish orders, of which John the Baptist was a member.
