Including the first photographs taken on Korean soil by Felice Beato, who accompanied an American squadron of five ships which landed in 1871 to attempt to open trade with Korea. This work includes albumen, hand- colored photos, lantern [glass] slides & stereoscopes. Keen insight to the people, landscape, town-life, costume, the crafts of traditional Korea. With notes on Beato, Ponting & other early Western photographers, Japanese influence & some of their photographers who went to Korea. Early Korean pho- tographers are also notes.
