Brewerton went to Kansas as a NY Herald correspondent on the war between the Free Soilers and the Pro Slavery factions, and wrote this serious subject in a very readable, entertaining manner. 400 pages plus ads. Frontis drawing of the author, with chipped tissue guard, Reddish brown boards with blind stamped decoration front and back. Spine (faded to tan) has gold title and illustration. Previous owner's name on front flyleaf. Small bookstore sticker on rear pastedown. Board corners are bumped and partially worn through. Light wear at top of spine. Rear hinge starting, but book is straight and tight A few foxing spots on preliminary pages.
