[DOUGLASS, Stephen A.]. Kansas, Utah, and the Dred Scott Decision. Remarks of Hon. Stephen A. Douglass [sic], Delivered in the State House at Springfield, Illinois, on 12th of June, 1857 [caption title]. [n.p., possibly Springfield], [1857]. 8pp. On a single folded sheet. Untrimmed and partially uncut. Moderate staining and toning, else very good. BYRD 2633. COHEN 10083. OCLC 82744422, 871172680. "Douglas was invited by the federal grand jury to address it upon the state of the nation. This speech was the first public expression of his views on the Dred Scott decision and was a year before his debates with Lincoln. In it he accepted the decision and insisted that 'the whole principle of Popular Sovereignty and self-government is sustained and firmly established by the authority of this decision.' The speech was part of the preliminary groundwork for re-election in 1858 and was widely distributed and printed throughout the state in both English- and German-language editions" - Byrd. This speech was also printed the same year in Chicago. Both are rare. Only six copies are listed in OCLC. Byrd lists three issues, each with different collations, and according to Byrd's population counts, this issue is far scarcer than the other two.
