Karate Power! Learning the Art of the Empty Hand

Briefly traces the history of karate, demonstrates basic stances, punches, blocks, and kicks, and discusses warmups, drills, and noncontact fighting

Grade 4-8 A basic primer on Japanese karate for those who know little or nothing about the sport. In an easy-to-read format, Parulski carries readers from the history of karate through warm-ups, stances, the use of hands and kicks, formal exercises (Gankaku Kata) and creative techniques which mix break-dancing with more traditional karate techniques. Instructions are arranged in numerical order, and numbered black-and-white photographs are used sequentially to illustrate the text. Directions are simple and easy to understand and make this a useful tool for a wide range of ages. Joe Bearden, Dallas Public Library
