Kathe Kollwitz: Works in Color

Profiles the work of the distinguished German-born artist that reveal her mastery of a wide range of themes, images, and techniques

YA-- This beautifully presented book is a vivid account of Kollwitz' work transitions throughout her long life, with particular focus on her use of color. The detailed introduction as well as a biographical outline serve to give concise facts of her life and illustrate external influences which produced the mature work of this artist. She is famous for her drawing and purity of line and form, but perhaps even better known for her melancholic response to major themes of life. In 1922 she wrote in her diary "I have come to terms with the fact that my art serves causes, I intend to have an effect on these times in which human beings are so distraught and helpless." For students researching the modern history of Germany, as well as those studying modern and/or women artists, this artist's life and work would provide significant substance.
