A uncommon 1943 edition of Kelly's Handbook, detailing the seemingly noteworthy families and members of the upper British classes. The first incarnation of Kelly"s Handbook called 'The Upper Ten Thousand: an alphabetical list of all members of noble families' was first published in 1875, before changing its title to 'Kelly"s Handbook of the Upper Ten Thousand' in 1878. However, to even further emphasise the 'exclusiveness' of the text and its subjects the series name changed again in 1880, becoming 'Kelly"s Handbook to the Titled, Landed and Official Classes'. As suggested within all these titles, the Handbooks contained biographical information for the seemingly noteworthy families and figures in the 'upper-crust' of British society. Unlike other Directories, such as the rival publications 'Debrett"s Peerage' and 'Burke"s Peerage', the Kelly"s Handbook series weren't the Handbooks weren"t specific to regions but covered the good and great of the entire country. This copy is the 'Sixty-Ninth annual edition' of Kelly's Handbook, in the year 1943. This copy features many interesting contemporary adverts to the front of the text and also an attached bookmark. In cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound. Rubbed to boards, joints and extremities. Bumped to head and tail of spine, resulting in small split to head of spine. Marking to boards. Slight sunning to spine. Hinges tender. Internally, generally firmly bound, although there is small section detached but present. Pages generally bright, lightly spotted.
