Kavya Patel is twenty-one, a pharmacy senior at Rutgers, and the daughter her mother can sum up for a room in four words: Senior. Pharmacy. Good family. She lives at home in suburban New Jersey, where her father has run the same Turnpike hotel for twenty-five years, where the towels are counted, where the phone rings with aunties, and where nothing that happens in the house stays in it.
What her family does not know: the boyfriend she has been seeing since the spring. The two elective courses she registered for in three minutes. And the Bhagavad Gita a woman in Iselin pressed into her hands — a paperback wrapped in red cloth, another woman's handwriting already in the margins.
She opens it expecting the book her parents quote at her. What she finds is an argument about duty that does not say what they say it says: that a borrowed life, lived perfectly, is still the wrong life.
Over four months, in a house where every private thing becomes community information, Kavya has to decide what she is willing to lose. Her mother has a speech about sacrifice and knows exactly when to use it. Her father has stopped speaking. Her seventeen-year-old brother is handed the freedoms she was never offered, and does not yet know it.
Kem Cho? is Gujarati for how are you? — the question every aunty asks, and the one no one in this family can answer honestly.
What this book does not do
It does not end with a mother who softens, or a family that heals. There is no reconciliation scene. If you are looking for the immigrant-daughter novel where love finally wins and everyone is forgiven, this is not it. If you have been waiting for one that takes the break seriously — that lets a woman pay the real price for her own life, and does not quietly hand it back to her — start here.
For readers of Fatima Farheen Mirza, Celeste Ng, Avni Doshi, and Jhumpa Lahiri.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
