It was the original intention of the author to give, in the Key, merely a series of brief hints upon the solutions of the more difficult problems. Be'was led to modify this plan and to issue the work in its present form, chiefly from the consideration that as there are in the country many young persons who, from various causes, are unable to avail themselves of the advice and assistance of a teacher, it would be a great boon to these to have access to a book to which they might refer with the certainty of having every doubt removed as to the correctness of their work and methods of solution. He offers the work to his fellow teachers with the hope that they will accord it the same favourble reception that they have so kindly given to the National Arithmetic.
