Keyboard Strategies : Source Materials for Accompanying, Score Reading and Transposing

Keyboard Strategies: Source Materials for Accompanying, Score Reading, and Transposing is a piano method collection featuring classical music source materials by various composers, edited by Melvin Stecher and Norman Horowitz. Bringing together practical keyboard studies and classical repertoire, this collection focuses on three essential areas of musicianship: accompanying, score reading, and transposition. It is particularly relevant to pianists working with vocal soloists, choirs, and instrumental performers.

The book opens with choral studies and chorales devoted to four-part reading before moving into its three central areas of study. The accompaniment section features nine popular vocal and instrumental solos, providing musical material for exploring the pianist's supporting role in ensemble performance. Score-reading selections draw from accompanied SATB works, orchestral scores, and string quartet scores, while transposition exercises incorporate material from familiar symphonies.

These varied musical sources connect keyboard technique with the broader demands of collaborative music making. Reading multiple parts encourages attention to musical texture and independent voices, while accompaniment materials highlight the relationship between the piano and other performers. Transposition studies add another dimension to keyboard practice, connecting written scores with changing tonal contexts.

With its combination of piano technique and practical musical applications, Keyboard Strategies offers a thoughtful resource for lessons, independent study, rehearsal preparation, and performance-related practice. Its focus on collaborative musicianship also makes it a meaningful gift for pianists interested in accompanying and the art of reading music across different ensemble settings.
