Khokha: The Empty Case

'Khokha: The Empty Case, is a blend of fantasy and philosophy, penned by the author who was primarily a professor of Zoology. Although, all narratives are a mix of truth and fantasy, Dr HS Rathore has been successful in weaving a relatable tale that explores the eternal questions of life and spirit. Beginning with a cursory visit to a deserted, dilapidated hut on the shores of a river, the unnamed protagonist - the youth - encounters a mysterious scene which arouses the child-like curiosity leading to the discovery of an unusual ascetic with extraordinary occult powers. They become associated because both needed each other. As the narrative unfolds, it digs deeper into many facets of everyday life and interacts with passing spirits who share their perspectives on human life on planet Earth.

The quintessence of the narrative is its vivid imagery that sets the tone of the story. Written in a simple, understandable and lucid prose, the novella offers a gripping read. The visual representation of some of the ideas and settings aids the imagination of the reader and highlights the significance of the narrative content. A must-read for all book lovers who are looking for some novelty and experimentation in Indian writing in English. Khokha will prove a book to be read and remembered for its stimulating interpretation of the intriguing queries of life.
