لا يمكن النظر إلى لا تقتل عصفوراً ساخراً رواية الكاتبة الأميركية هاربر لي إلاَّ وفقاً لطبيعتها الراصدة، التي تقدم وعياً خاصاً للحياة - ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين - وسواء أكان ذلك الوعي مرتبطاً بلحظة راهنة أم ماضية فإن هذه الرواية على الرغم من مرور أكثر من نصف قرن على صدورها أول مرة، فهي ما تزال تبحث عن إجابة لأسئلة متصلة بالجماعة وبالوعي العام والفردي على مستوى المجتمعات، ليس في الولايات الجنوبية لأميركا فحسب، حيث تدور أحداث الرواية، بل في كل زمان ومكان، فعملية قتل عصفوراً مغرداً هي جريمة مثلها مثل قتل أي إنسان على وجه الأرض، لقد جعلت هاربر لي من روايتها إطاراً يعرض قيم وأفكار مرحلة ماضية في إطار تجربة معيشة، وليس مجرد أفكار تجريدية فقط، فالرواية لم تقدم قضية التفرقة العنصرية في أميركا فقط، بل عرضت للوجه الآخر من القيم المضادة والتي تتمثل في أهمية التمسك بالحق والعدل والمساواة في مواجهة الظلم والاستعباد، وبهذا المعنى تحمل الرواية أبعاداً سوسيولوجية تشهد على مأزق اللامعنى والعبثية المنحدرين من صلب الحضارة الغربية. فانفتاح الرواية على إطار مرجعي، تولد في إطار سياق اجتماعي معين - الاضطهاد العرقي للسود في أميركا - وعملية خلق عالم بديل أو موازٍ لهذا الواقع. على الورق جعل من هذا العمل نسقاً قيمياً له ملامحه الخاصة، بوصفه جنساً أدبياً له حضوره المتميز عند القارئ، يعيد تشكيل وعيه بالأشياء من حوله، يستطيع من ثم أن يعيد تشكيل وجوده في هذا العالم الواسع وموقعه كفرد فيه، ومحاولة تغييره أيضاً، وهذا التغير قدمته الروائية في سياق فني وبناء معماري يظل مؤثراً لمعاينة الماضي والآني في لحظة واحدة.
