Item description from seller

No date but the latest date I found in the book was 1937. Softcover with some light wear. In this engaging memoir, pioneer settler N. A. Winter recalls the transformation of New Zealand's King Country from an isolated Māori stronghold into a developing farming and timber district. Drawing on personal experience, he recounts the opening of the region to European settlement, the arrival of the Main Trunk railway, bush clearing, road building, sawmilling, pioneering farming and the hardships of everyday life on the frontier. Alongside colourful anecdotes of local personalities and memorable incidents, Winter reflects on his relationships with Māori communities and the unique character of the King Country during its formative years. Rich in firsthand observation and local detail, the book is an invaluable primary source for the history of one of New Zealand's last great pioneer districts.
