A Reflective Study of the Book of Revelation

The book of Revelation is a faithful record of a series of extraordinary visions, the like of which had little precedent in terms of scope or depth of insight.

It is one of the world’s greatest feats of writing, far more complex than most great literature. It is theologically robust, internally logical, subtly nuanced. It draws together the whole of the Old Testament: Law, Prophets, Wisdom and Psalms. It paints visual pictures so stunning that the reader is filled with awe and wonder. It proclaims Jesus as the Son of Man, the Lamb of God, his Word and faithful witness, who calls his people to become his Bride, and who will come again in glory to bring judgement against all that is corrupt and evil in this world and to set up his throne on earth forever as triumphant King and sovereign Lord.

The complexity of John’s visions is overwhelming but then so is the content. Through imagery, metaphor and allegory, John’s visions convey the greatest story ever told. In Revelation, the telling of this story expands, moves to another space, folds in on itself and then opens out once again. It is a bit like entering a parallel world through a portal, exploring a room, seeing the next portal, which leads you through into an even greater space, and so on….
