One of a lovely collection of classic children's books issued in the early-mid-20th century by Garden City Publishing Co. in NY, which primarily published reprints of books orig. issued by its parent company, Doubleday. All the books were cloth-bound hardcover books with a colored paper pastedown to the front board, each illustrated by a famous artist of the day. Inside is a full-page, full-color frontispiece & 27 pen & ink illustrations throughout the text (246 pages). This is the FIRST EDITION in this format from 1938, though the stories & poems were orig. written1891-1909. Condition on this one breathtakingly VG+: the navy blue cloth-covered boards & colorful front paper pastedown are exceptionally clean & bright, binding straight & strong, just a whisper of tanning around page edges, still nice & supple. All interior plates are intact & perfect. Old gift inscription on ffep in faded pen dated 1942. Slightly bumped corners. The DJ,with clipped front flap, is in VG- condition: all there, but with mild edgewear, including small chips, all around; light soil; slight fading to spine.
