Very Good. Illustrated edition published by Memento Publishing Co., Canton, Ohio, 1886. Original brown cloth stamped in gilt and black with floral-patterned endpapers. Binding square and tight with only minor shelfwear to corners and spine ends. Clean interior, all 36 engraved plates present, including 5 in color. Authored by Jno. Van Valkenburg, this richly visual fraternal guide details the ranks, ceremonies, insurance structures, and legislative acts of the Knights of Pythias. Features include biographical sketches, charter texts, poems, and depictions of regalia. In 1864, the U.S. Congress granted the Knights of Pythias a federal charter, the first such recognition extended to any fraternal society. Despite overlapping membership among Freemasons and Pythians, affiliation with one did not require or imply association with the other. A scarce survival in this state.
