Knowledge for the People, Or, the Plain Why and Because

Knowledge For The People, Or, The Plain Why And Because by John Timbs Knowledge For The People, Or, The Plain Why And Because is a nineteenth-century popular science compendium designed to educate a lay audience in the essentials of chemistry, physics, and practical industry. The work presents topics under clear headings such as Popular Chemistry, Mechanics, and Arts and Manufactures, often in a question-and-answer format that makes complex ideas accessible. It surveys the origins and definitions of chemistry, explains atoms, acids, bases, gases, heat, electricity, and crystallization, and links them to everyday life and technology. In Mechanics it introduces simple machines, the lever, wheel and axle, pulley, and friction, illustrating how these ideas underpin engineering, building, and transport. The Arts and Manufactures sections cover metalworking, iron and steel, glass, pottery, textile manufacture, and steam-powered industry, with historical anecdotes and practical explanations of processes. The book assembles explanations from authorities such as Davy, Wollaston, Brande, and Ure, to illuminate the plain reasons behind natural phenomena and human ingenuity.
