One photograph, nicely matted and framed (not examined out of frame). The print measures about 8" x 6", and the entire frame measures about 16" x 14". The print appears to be in very good or better condition, possibly laid to a backing board, but with no plainly visible flaws apart from a few thin creases to the bottom edge. Backed to the backing paper on verso is the original AP wire caption snipe, which reads, in full: "Associated Press Photo Please Use Credit / From San Francisco. CHRISTMAS SPIRIT PREVAILS. San Francisco, Dec. 17 - Pickets of the maritime are pictured on duty in the current waterfront strike. They have built a shack of odds and ends for refuge in inclement weather and it is adorned with a Christmas tree. A fire is kept going in the steel container the men are near. Associated Press photo. FXA NY&CXNEGA OTB 12/17/36 STFEHK". In the summer of 1934, San Francisco maritime workers engaged in one of the most contentious strikes in American history, which culminated in Bloody Thursday (7/5/34), when two Longshoremen succumbed to wounds inflicted upon them by police during the weeks-long confrontation. Though the strike ultimately ended in arbitration, with many of the workers' demands being at least partially met, there were dozens of shorter, less coordinated strikes throughout the rest of the decade, including the one depicted in this image, from December of 1936. Apart from the details described in the original AP caption, we will also note the following: the I.W.W. slogan, "An Injury to One is an Injury to All," hand-drawn on the side of the shanty, alongside several amateur portraits which likely depict important figures indecent labor history, or possibly local figures involved in the strikes. An excellent document of this 1936 San Francisco dockworkers' strike, nicely framed and mercifully retaining its original AP wire caption. Searches for this photograph using phrases from the caption were unsuccessful, leading us to wonder if the photograph was ever used in a newspaper or periodical. Seller Inventory # 7916
