Cloth. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st edition. 4 volume set, All 1st printings ( With the Scribner "A" on the copyright pages, with Scribner's "A" denoting 1st printing). A Good set. 8vo., illustrated. Red cloth with titles on spines in gilt. Cloth boards soiled. Spines moderately sunned, with lettering dulled a bit on spines. Light browning and foxing limited to the preliminary pages mostly at the edges. Volume 1 with tears at the spine's crown. Previous owner has added extra illustrations from other sources (magazine, newspapers, and other books, ass well as US Stamps commemorating the CIvil War). These numerous and interesting illustrations are added to all 4 volumes, with some old paste marks visible. Examples of illustrations are: D. S. Freeman's house, freeman himself, and the Servant who tended to him in Richmond; Freeman's typical day, RE Lee's house where he was born, an early house he owned, the death of the last member of the Army of N. Virginia in 1951, etc. Some underlining (mostly in vol. 1, and marginal notes: Fixing the date for Ball's Bluff, that Freeman evidently got wrong in the text.). "A classic example of the biographical form; exhaustively researched, vividly written, balanced, judicious and definitive in its portrayal of the Confederacy's greatest soldier." -Civil War Books.
